3/6/2020 Contest update
(Contest YTD is calculated from 1/3/2020 close.)
As global COVID-19 cases relentlessly climbed to above 100,000, investors watched stocks ride a roller coaster. Optimists went bargain hunting while pessimists believed the worst is yet to come, with cases to balloon once full-scale testing begins in the U.S. As one of the pessimists, my wife and I canceled our long-planned trip to Spain so fans of my updates (assuming there are a handful) will be spared the agony of a few weeks of their absence.
Meanwhile, at Friday’s close, the Contest median was down -3.33% YTD (vs. down -2.08% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was down -.12% YTD (vs. down -3.50% YTD a week ago), the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was down -3.37% YTD (vs. down –4.37% YTD a week ago), while the Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI), was down -4.93% YTD (vs. down -5.03% YTD a week ago).
Contest leader JBOG’s portfolio continued to ride the TRIL rocket now having propelled it to a spectacular 113.64% YTD gain. TRIL holders as well are second place FILO’s portfolio, up 60.97% YTD and OLIVIER’s portfolio, up 40.01% YTD.
At Friday's close, 18 of the 42 Contest portfolios were in the green, with 18 beating the NBI and 22 beating the SPSIBI.
The 197 Contest stock picks have an average YTD gain of 5.31% but a median YTD loss of -7.84%.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: None.
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits & mergers, greatly appreciated.)
Enjoy a safe & relaxing first March weekend biotechies!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
