Sparx has links to couple of reports on all the Canadian brokerage with ranking etc. So you may want to check that..

sparxtrading.com

sparxtrading.com

Also check the current deals and promotions by discount brokers .. sparxtrading.com

All the bank discount brokerages have online platforms and commission of $9.99 per trade (no limit on # shares or share price so works quite well for low priced stocks or penny plays as well) but each one may have minimum account balance requirement etc. I have TD Waterhouse, Scotia iTrade accounts.. Mainly because I had opened them ages ago and have not bothered to look into transferring them..

All the brokers also have reduced commission for active traders.. $5.99 or $6.99 but I don't like the pressure of trading so I don't bother.. All of them have quarterly number of trades requirements to qualify for that so for me $9.99 is good enough..

I also have an account with IBKR.. They have pretty good terms as far as margin rate, exchange rate etc. and if you trade shares of 1k or 2k, the commission works out to $5 or $10 but if your trade has a lot more shares or if you are trading penny stocks in thousands, it becomes very expensive.. They also charge you data fee etc. so you may wan to look at the fine print..

FWIW..
