If it is meaningless, what was 538 talking about? For that matter what is the header here talking about when it says center and left?

Obviously we all know what it means.

Don't you think people can be roughly categorized as right, left and center? Demographics tell us a lot about human behavior.

Science is the systematic study of things. While it is often imperfect it is better than no organized study and observation of the world we live in.
