We took a cruise in '89 to China (and s. Korea and Japan and Hong Kong) because my mom became ill and had booked it- and gave it to my husband and me. We were the youngest people on the ship- everyone got really ill on the trip(except us, until we brought home some sort of flu home.)

We took a Viking cruise in 2014- which turned out to be weirdly awful since everyone was super old and slow and the side trips were often dumb. Luckily I'd planned stays in Lucerne and Amsterdam that made the trip worthwhile and we decided what we enjoyed was just staying somewhere for a few weeks- and doing all our trips ourselves. We love that. After the Viking debacle we did Berlin, Amsterdam (twice) and Utrecht (which we fell in love with), Spain (Madrid and Barcelona), Portugal (Lisbon and environs) and Dublin and Vienna. We book our own guides, use the city cards that allow you access to all the museums, and generally have a blast.

This last summer I booked a really cheap deal of a cruise- because my husband wanted to see Venice and Greece and I didn't want to stay there (and I suspected he wouldn't like it). So a cruise allowed him to see several places pretty quickly and painlessly- travel wise. I did love our stay in Murano (if someone you love ever really needs to see Venice- stay in Murano and take the boat over to Venice for a day trip.) But the people on our cruise seemed mostly to broil themselves in the sun, drink and eat to excess. Not our thing at all. But we spent very little money figuring out we couldn't even stomach a cruise for easy transport- and the stays I had added on- several days in Murano, a few weeks in Vienna and some time in Oslo- more than made up for the annoyance of the cruise.
