CheckFree Names Lewis Senior Vice President/Electronic Commerce Products, Wilson Vice President of Corporate Communications/Media Relations

January 26, 1998 9:19 AM EST

ATLANTA, Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- CheckFree (Nasdaq: CKFR) announced today the promotion of Matthew S. Lewis to senior vice president of electronic commerce products. Previously, Mr. Lewis was vice president of corporate strategy and communications.

The Atlanta-based company also announced the promotion of Laurinda I. Wilson, formerly communications manager, to vice president of corporate communications. In this capacity, Ms. Wilson will coordinate media relations and other internal and external communications efforts, including the annual report and diverse publications.

"Matt and Laurinda are talented individuals and will do extremely well in their new positions," said Peter J. Kight, president and chief executive officer. "Matt will work closely with our technology, sales and marketing people to ensure that CheckFree products lead the market wherever we compete, while Laurinda will spearhead our communications inside and outside of the company."

In a related announcement, chief financial officer Jim Douglass will now manage investor relations, which previously was handled by Mr. Lewis.

Mr. Lewis will oversee the CheckFree electronic commerce line of products, including CheckFree E-Bill, the only electronic bill presentment service available in the market today. "Despite the noise in the marketplace, CheckFree is the only company that is currently providing a true electronic round-trip for bill presentment and bill payment," said Mr. Lewis. "Some of our billers, like BellSouth and Florida Power & Light completed pilot programs last year and have been presenting electronic bills to customers and receiving electronic payments ever since."

In March, 1997, CheckFree introduced the nation's first end-to-end system for electronic presentment of richly formatted bills over the Internet, as well as next-generation electronic payment and remittance capabilities. CheckFree E-Bill uses existing payment systems and allows consumers to access and pay their bills through the branded home-banking services of financial institutions.

Since CheckFree E-Bill's induction into the Smithsonian permanent research collection in 1997, the company has signed contracts with Chase Manhattan Bank and more than 20 of the nation's largest billers. Combined, these companies represent more than 200 million consumer and business accounts. The company also recently entered into a 10-year agreement with The Integrion Financial Network to provide electronic billing and payment processing through Integrion's IFS banking platform.

Founded in 1981, CheckFree (www.checkfree.com) is the leading provider of financial electronic commerce services, software and related products for more than two million consumers, 1,000 businesses and 850 financial institutions. CheckFree designs, develops and markets services that enable its customers to make electronic payments and collections, automate paper-based recurring financial transactions and conduct secure transactions on the Internet.
