If you look at what they do in hospitals for dying patients, throwing thousands or tens of thousands of dollars so they can say, "We did everything we could [to drain your bank account] !" this is really just par for the course.

If we save a million US lives, which would be pretty bad but actually quite low if 250 million caught this, it would work out to 1-4 million dollars per life saved. If it was 4 million lives (more realistic considering all the other people who'd die because the hospitals are full), it would be a bargain at maybe 1/4 to 1/2 million per life saved.

But of course, nobody in charge would get re-elected no matter how they spun it.

Not many families can shut the firehose off from their assets to the hospital at in the last three weeks of somebody's life. More and more cannot even do that with a pet, spending 10k, 20k and more for chemo and other exotic treatments.

So this is kind of like that. I think the people of 1918 who had it really bad with Spanish flu would be just astonished at what the world is doing today. I think in three weeks, people are going to start thinking that, too, when they realize this shutdown potentially could go for months.
