When I was in high school I used to volunteer at a hospital. It was support roles. I got to hang out with the "Candy Stripers" which was reward enough.

At any rate, one of the support roles was sterilizing things like surgical kits, gowns, and masks. Yes, the masks were made of sturdy cloth and after they were used they were washed, wrapped in a package, and heated in the autoclave until the tape strips that kept the package together changed colors.

The hospital never ran out of masks, or gloves, or syringes and needles.
Now everything is disposable.
