To Skipper,

Overreaction? Not if you believe cpq is dead in the water for 12 months. Fund managers do not buy for long-term (in excess of 1 year). To keep their jobs they have got to show capital appreciation by end of the year. If they believe cpq's earnings will take a hit in 1998 then they will avoid it like the plaque until charge-offs and eps hits have been taken. Right now there appears to be a general feeling of great disappointment. The question among these short-term fund managers now is where do I put the money in 1998 which was about to go into cpq? Yes I know - I haven't talked to every fund manager in America. However, I have talked to a number of brokers who claim simply are passing on to me what they have heard the general consensus to be. Judging from the stock's reaction today I don't think I'm being fed a lot of nonsense. The consensus also appears to be that in the long-term (greater than 1 year) cpq will do just fine. Unfortunately, fund managers cannot wait and see (certainly not if they want to keep their jobs) which will result in lower demand for cpq stock in 1998 or at least until the picture becomes clearer as to impact of dec acquisition.

I'm a long-term cpq investor in cpq and believe me I am trusting cpq management that this will be a long-term plus. I was hoping however, to see some capital in appreciation in 1998.
