in this particular case,

This isn't your gin and tonic quinine. plaquenil is hydroxychloroquinine, and it doesn't kill the virus. It's also got some grease (chlorine) and a hydroxy-group in different places, which allow it's therapeutic index to not kill you if you take too much.

As we mentioned before the virus just kinda gets your immune system all revved up to kill you by something called a cytokine storm. This is essentially sepsis, and literally the time from a triggering event to death is minutes, not hours.

Tis the same mechanism in malaria.

Preventing this from happening is far better handled in a hospital setting, under a doctor, because even if, the need for more, other, different treatments at this point is now very high.
