Expert fears people may abandon pets due to concerns of COVID-19

(LEX 18) — People all across the nation are concerned over the uncertainty surrounding the Coronavirus, and through that fear, experts are worried people may abandon their animals.
Hannah Truxell is an animal activist and she says pets can become a silent victim in this chaos, "People are afraid that they aren't going to be able to afford their animals and if they've already lost their jobs they are especially in panic. People are also concerned their animals can catch COVID-19 or transfer it to them."
The CDC has debunked that though their website says, "At this time there is no evidence that companion animals including pets can spread COVID-19."
They do suggest washing your hands though after being around animals, and to restrict contact with pets if you become sick with COVID-19, but Truxell hopes people keep from panicking and if they do need help with their animals they should reach out to organizations, "we just want people to try to weather this storm as long as you can, companion animals will help you get through this, they will get you outside, they will be a comfort to you, don't give up on them, hold on be there for them, the way they have been there for you," says Truxell.
