Not so sure about your calculation if it is related to US only. What is certain that based on the continuing hysteria the damage worldwide would in your range if not much more.

The sad part is that the actual # of direct affected people by the virus is not properly documented as are the collateral damages from the worldwide hysteria of a fast spreading SARS-Con-2 virus, which if not for the cover-up would have past us as a more severe flu than the ordinary.

On that TEAM CHINA is to blame as the spread of the virus could have been stopped in "the bud" if taken seriously in Nov. 2019.in Wuhan.

By second half of December 2019 I participated in a conference with people from around the world sponsored by HUJ and fell very ill from a type of flu with symptoms unknown to me until then. I do have my own suspicions.

As to the economic damage - it is hard to ascertain when almost the whole world is plunging in an hysterical mode with so many politicians taken sinister advantages of the situation with the deafening cheers of the media and the talking heads who demonstrate their clueless uselessness.

If TEAM CHINA would have been more responsible and tackle the viral problem in Wuhan in early November 2019 and not cover up until it got out of control we would have had a more orderly liquidation of assets due to the grossly over-leveraged world, and less politicians would have been so bold in their self-promotion on our expense.

Net result would have been an relative orderly correction of around 20% in equities an some sparse debt defaults.
Unfortunate the hydrocarbon rich countries decided to start a covert war under the pretense of an epidemic, which in my own judgement will end-up that all of them being losers as they resist any advantage offered by technology and science which in return hurt their monopoly on controlling the energy markets and by this indirectly our lives. .

Many have already forgotten the "Greta Thunberg" effect the great wild fires of Australia and Siberia that destroyed millions of wild creatures and hundred of thousand of hectares of forests that otherwise where generating oxygen for all of us, if in Australia or Siberia in 2019 and what I was trying to show in my posts on FB and LinkedIn since 2015. Add to all of that the poisoning and suffocating plastics that kill so many maritime creatures out of our species own convenience, and many are forgetting that they are also a food and health source.

Are we a self-destructive species? May be yes based on the development of the last 150 years or so - as a living species we are too spoiled.
