Competition for influenza diagnostic test. The most recent Economist had an article on three companies developing flu diagnostic tests. In particular it talked about ZymeTx, which has a test which recently won "official approval" (presumably that means FDA approval). It is a simple swab test, but takes 1 hr to resolve.

The other two companies mentioned are BioStar and Biota (the latter an Australian company), which are collaborating on two different tests. Their tests have the advantage of taking only 15 minutes to resolve. (Note, Quidel talked about a 5 minute test, although it sounds like they are a little further behind.)

In addition, both teams are working with some of the same technology to develop flu treatments. Biota actually started clinical trials last summer (Australia's winter). Apparently their is a synergy between the detection processes and treatment processes, so it is no wonder that Glaxo is teaming up with Quidel.

From the sound of it, the Quidel product is better. Lets just hope that it isn't too late to the party.
