UK has already implemented shielding measures for the old and vulnerable. People in this group should not leave their homes, not even for shopping and exercise. Food will be delivered. Etc.

However, social distancing advice and measures still apply for the whole population. This is necessary due to the sheer virulence of the disease. Fit and young people also get ill, and a proportion will need treatment. If the social distancing is let up, there is a danger of overwhelming the healthcare system by the large number of hospitalisations, even if most of these are expected to survive with good treatment.

The goal is to flatten the curve below healthcare system capacity, at a minimum.

The exit strategy is more effective treatment (drugs) and ultimately a vaccine.
