Very well stated Mr. Niceguy,

We have to stop being nice guys...

My guess is that we always had those characters on both sides of the aisle but some of them managed to put aside differences in a time of crisis.

We have definitely lost "of the people, by the people and for the people".

Franklin said it best, "a republic ...if you can keep it". We have been dealing with that since inception.

Our form of government is based on trust and good will. When too many people in power start to work against the system, it all begins to fall apart. Eisenhower warned of the military - industrial complex and to me that is what we call The Swamp only on steroids. I doubt that the founders understood how money and media would play such a huge roll AND that we would have people but into the system in order to destroy it.

I fear we are running into the issue warned of by Tytler and also attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville , " A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy.

I think the Founders did understand that governments van turn on the people and that is why is their wisdom, we have the 2nd amendment.
