seems to me that 'meritocracy' is a plutocratic strategy that encourages sycophancy. Note that it CAN be... as long as there is not good faith inherent in the system... The question is not... Did they dupe you into cooperation to benefit themselves while lying to you ? (And of course they did...) Rather... Should you allow them to fail in that lack of good faith... or demand proper accountability ? The losing position... is the one that lets them off the hook... when they convince you the standard you intend to have applied to them... is a myth ?
