Struggled for a bit trying to remember...

Source for a story... humans were created, genetically engineered by aliens to mine gold for them...

Apparently earth is relatively rich in gold... and the aliens needed lots of it to distribute it as a nano-powder in space around their planet... as a sun screen... because their sun had gotten too hot...

It was Zecharia Stichin... one of the Ancient Astronauts advocates, who melded Sumerian concepts and history with the gold idea... It's essentially the same concept as highlighted in the original movie Star Gate... that humans were slaves of ancient alien "gods"... only with the purpose of the slavery being targeted at extraction of gold, which the aliens either valued enough, or they detested doing work enough, to make us so we could do it for them...

Have to roll your eyes at the critics claiming "its not good science"... yeah... and the Rubaiyat is a bad translation, too. It's a good story... in part because its funny in explaining a lot... we like gold... because we were made to... like truffle hounds.
