I really don't like these articles. They insinuate that the death rate from coronavirus will naturally be around 1% or less, just like seasonal flu.

Ten, I read it more as they are hoping it stays around 1% rather than insinuating. The experts such as Dr Birx are likely praying for it as we are. I don't think they are trying to mislead us.

How come Italy, for example, has such a high death rate? They're almost at 10%.

You answered one part with the age 60 cut off for treatment. Also, many older people were isolated in Northern Italy (mountainous) all alone and were cut off from their kids and relatives. Many likely died from other causes. I personally don't believe that their socialized medicine could handle such a wide pandemic. Look at the problems that we had gearing up and we are advanced and money was no object. This was unique.

I have also read the the Italians did not differentiate death totals from Covid vs natural death, heart attacks, etc. Perhaps they were just overwhelmed. Some think it was done purposely to scare people into isolating and obeying the rules. I certainly don't know.

Several of our thread members live in Italy, and they can probably explain it much better.
