Rose, originally I thought our PM was doing a decent job, and his self isolating in light of his wife was a good example being set ,, It still is.. However.. and we all know the economic hardship being wrought on people now with biz closings and social distancing... So as I have mentioned, my daughter 27 has been in Australia for over a year (since Nov 2018) working and traveling.. She has had whooping cough so she is at higher risk. She go very sick in mid December... (only told us a bad cold)... Turns out she was more ill than she can recall with an upper respiratory infection... Australia's med system (Not very Canadian friendly as it turns out.. but friendly to other commonwealth nations and US folk, a tale for another time) sent he home with and said bed rest... She lived in a 4 person dorm room setting.. no one else got sick.. unlikely an early Covid case.. Anyway with all the news on Covid she was concerned. She found Australians apically very cavilier about the entire issue.. so decided last minute to return home to Canada where her perception was things were being taken seriously. BTW bloomberg.com I picked her up at Pearson at 23:00 Wednesday night. I had texted her 1) You are being picked up by your dad, 2)The address where you will be quarantined.. 3) my cell number... Mind you this is 30 min prior to the MANDATORY quarantine taking effect. so I was concerned she would be hauled off to CFB Borden or some such.. Google relieved me though.. Anyway.. When she boarded her flight (leg 1) from Perth to Sydney (local flight).. the precaution taken was *Have you been out of country recently ?* . OK move along There was a woman (yes they did their best to space the passengers.. ) 3 seats away.. coughing the entire trip (5hrs ?),, Some flight crew wore gloves and mask so obviously at their discretion.. 1/2 by her estimation. The woman did not continue past Sydney.. Boarding the international flight to Dallas-Ft-Worth hub (leg-2) again the precaution was *Have you been out of country recently ?* . OK move along... On hat flight there was a woman traveling with her adult son who was coughing heavily and steadily for three hours 5 rows from my daughter.. Again flight crew were not all wearing PPE.. At about 3 hrs in the woman complained of not feeling well (what a surprise) and was quarantined in the upper deck of the plane.. The woman obviously should never have made it aboard.. Big fail for Australia.. Where is the government ? Upon arrival in Dallas.. she passed through customs.. usual checks or non native plants and guns... and that was it.. No Covid questions.. at which point she was free to go anywhere in the airport.. 5 hr layover.. She video chatted me 45 min as she strolled around to limber up after 15 hr flight fight from Sydney.. (Yes she was masked , N95, and gloved and safety glassed the entire time except for required removal of glasses at customs etc.. Big fail for the US.. Where is the government ? Daughter still has high hopes for better at home.. Upon arrival Pearson (leg-3) she was handed a pamphlet (typical flu stuff) about hand washing and 2 metres.. told there was up to 15K fine for not quarantining herself.. No questions as to where she was staying.. how she would get there.. contact number NADA.. Big fail for Canada.. Where is the government ? I won't bother to go into all the fails here except for the two most obvious.. It takes ALL of 2 minutes using and electronic thermometer and tongue depressor to check for both fever and physical evidence o sore throat... How many slipped through ? this is not good government effort ANYWHERE along the line.... In fact pretty disgusting... Imagine being at the cottage during mosquito / black fly season.. .. You swat the buggers.. you RAID the buggers and use repellent.. but keep getting bitten ... *because your windows are open and not screened... ..* Like I said Mr. Trudeau appeared to be doing a decent job (all parties are culpable in this) .. but now each time he says the government is doing all it can... I really want to puke.. Yes in 18 months economic fallout and hardship will still be huge.. So much could have been avoided with a little thought.. EVEN after pandemic announcement the gates remain unchecked.. Blackie.. Oh I almost forgot.. In Dallas she was handed a form with some simple health /travel questions and was required to fill it out for Canadian authorities.. It was NEVER picked up from anyone.. but they were terribly concerned about regular customer stuff. what you are bringing back etc.. .
