Britain developed a cutting-edge new strategy for dealing with pandemics by building herd immunity. It was actually really novel and exciting and they were anxious to try it out. When the coronavirus came along, the government plugged its spread rate, death rate, etc into the strategy and got the plan
...and then it turned out they’ll need ventilators. I hope that somewhere, along the way they, they may have also recognized that we still don’t know “its spread rate, death rate, etc”. We don’t know what’s the true prevalence of the disease - and of immunity. That’s why Dr Birx had to back away from that model because it didn’t fit the “facts on the ground”.
