It only makes sense. Obviously viral particles are small, but if they are travelling on blobs of spit the mask will stop them. It also (importantly) stops you touching your nose and mouth. Sure, you might scratch a cheek- but you can wash your face. Tough (I'm joking- impossible) to wash out the nasal mucosa after you've put a virus in there.
