"different ways to sell their products". I'd love to bypass those crooks. I happily work with direct buyers. But consumers are poorly educated, happy to buy inferior product for the convenience of it, don't want to mess with a freezer, can't scrape more than a hundred bucks together to buy meat in quantity, etc. I know a few producers who got great direct supply deals and bypass the packers. But if you don't have a big private buyer you get stuck peddling one beef at a time and after awhile it just isn't worth your time.

Marketing has always been the issue. The modern "grass fed" movement is making strides on bypassing the packer crooks.

To be fair, though, believe it or not, the packers were losing for much of the past year or at least on very tight margin. They were paying the feedlots a premium and not getting that back in the stores.
