The Department of Health and Human Services appeared to go on clean up duty for Jared Kushner on Friday, scrubbing language from its website that contradicted what the presidential son-in-law said a day earlier about the country’s emergency supply stockpiles.

In his debut appearance at a White House COVID-19 briefing on Thursday, Kushner raised some eyebrows as he claimed that the so-called Strategic National Stockpile isn’t meant to supply states in dire need of medical equipment like ventilators and face masks amid the coronavirus outbreak.

“It’s supposed to be our stockpile. It’s not supposed to be states’ stockpiles that they then use," said Kushner, 39, who had no governmental experience before joining his father-in-law’s administration as an all-around senior adviser overseeing everything from Middle East peace plans to pandemic response efforts.

Kushner’s briefing comments contradicted an entry on the Health and Human Service Department’s website that described the Strategic National Stockpile as a well of “life-saving pharmaceuticals and medical supplies” meant to replenish state reserves when “local supplies run out.”

“When state local, tribal, and territorial responders request federal assistance to support their response efforts, the stockpile ensures that the right medicines and supplies get to those who need them most during an emergency,” stated the entry, which was still live on the website as recently as 10 a.m. Friday.
