To Robert and all: I think this Compaq-DEC deal will be positive for computer users in general and for AMD too. Digital is one of the early adopters of the K6, and the combination of the two companies may mean more commitment to the K6. Digital is an Intel competitor in the high end, and I think Compaq will groom the Alpha for it's high end server and workstation lines, and I hope the K6 for consumer lines. Furthermore, the K7 will be using the Alpha EV6 bus protocol. This means Compaq can develop a line which will have interchangeable processors; the Alpha for the scientific and Unix market, the K7 for the corporate/consumer market. With Compaq's marketing might behind it, I think we will be seeing a lot more native Alpha software being ported. This will ensure the acceptance of the EV6 and the availability of chipsets for these processors.
