The innumerate mistakenly thought WuFlu is a normal flu but just a bit worse. They have also mistakenly thought it's just a problem for old people with other health problems. They also said and right now are still stupidly saying that masks need not be worn and even more absurdly even imply masks increase infections by making people touch their faces. They have also been fanatical about washing hands when inhaled droplets is obviously the good way to get it.
A single choir was nearly all infected during their enthusiastic singing and exhaling in close proximity. Same with a dementia hospital in New Zealand where care givers are not expected to wear masks.
Right here in SI I have explained from when only China gave numbers that the mortality rate of reported cases is about 10%, skewed towards old people. But I estimate that half of the infected are not reported so the actual mortality is about 5%.
Your mileage will vary because countries vary. India with median age about 27 and Italy at 44 will have very different results especially with climate, diets, smoking, immune systems included.
So some countries will be 2%.
The exponential growth confused the innumerate because cases happen 2 weeks or 3 week before deaths.
New Zealand has had only 1 death of a 74 year old lady but we're now up to 1200 identified infections. We are going to get about 50 dead from that number depending on the age of those infected which we are told is greatly in the 20 to 40 age group and up to 50. But now we have 30 infected at the dementia place so they will be in trouble.
The politicians kept blathering about it being a war. First they should know their enemy, then avoid being a target, and find how to head it off at the pass, keep Trojan horses OUT of the citadel. Etc. They are hopeless at war. China did ok. China got serious, eventually. Being the home of sars, H5N1 I'd have thought they would be ready and waiting. But no. First they punished the messengers. Totalitarian thugs.
The dopey free world is now blaming China when Trump at al did the same = called it a hoax, nothing to worry about, etc etc.
Self defence and wait for it to die out by eliminating vectors if transmission is best since elimination is hopeless in North America and Europe and India.
Economic destruction is not worth adding to the death rate, even if 5% of infected die. Those 5% are being infected anyway, just a week or 3 later. I will be hiding, wearing masks, washing, waiting for a vaccine or for it to fizzle out.
