When you check the global tracking sites, you see that the US has one of the highest mortality rates...that is all due to the lack of testing. People have to be visibly sick to be tested and admitted.

As an FYI, the family members in NYC who called, were told that "if you can breath, don't come". So they stayed. And then when they finally had to call for an ambulance, one of them ended up needing a ventilator, but could not have it for 36 hours due to the shortage. Now he is on it and getting better. But his story is the norm and is why the US is having such a high mortality rate.
