You said it yourself, he was "shot and killed," therefore the cause of death was (a) the gun shot...

At the moment of death it becomes completely irrelevant that he had any other medical issue(s) unless he was shot and killed ONLY BECAUSE he had cancer... in that case, then cancer would be the cause of death...
