Pkrbkr,
Is it worth F'ng up the world economy for the 1%?
Let's say 80% of the population catches it and the death rate is 0.1%.

The population of America today is 328M, which means 262M catch COVID-19, of which 262,000 die from it.

That is a pretty big f'n deal. Even without mandatory lockdowns, the economy will take a huge hit.

Even my employer told everyone to start working from home before Santa Clara County issued its "shelter in place" order. Conferences got cancelled, and my wife and I cancelled a cruise we were supposed to go on this month, well before the government stepped in and shut everything down.

There's no getting around taking a hit to the global economy.

As for whether mandatory lockdowns work, I'm going by the clear difference between what happened here in California vs. what happened in New York. There's a reason why 45% of the COVID-19 cases are concentrated in two states, NY and NJ. They shut down too late, whereas California shut down early.

"But but that's apples and oranges!" Could be, but this is my conclusion at the moment until I see a better explanation for the difference.
