Personally I prefer real names, but nicknames are a necessary evil to protect against unwanted publicity. For example, many employees at tech companies use aliases so that their association with SI does not jeapardize their jobs.

At the same time, especially with financial discussion, I think complete anonymity is a bad thing. That's why we make everyone verify an email address.
