This article addresses the issue quite specifically in relation to the variability of coronavirus responses to varying pH... reducing the pH sensitivity down to a couple of known base pairs in a specific site.

Note that the link is a .pdf file:

Alteration of the pH Dependence of Coronavirus-Induced Cell Fusion: Effects of Mutations in the Spike Glycoprotien.

jvi.asm.org

Alteration of the pH Dependence of Coronavirus-Induced Cell. Fusion: Effect of ... into the host cell requires virus binding to cellular receptors followed by fusion of viral ... resistant to the cytopathic effects of vaccinia virus which developed late ...

What that suggests... is that a fairly simple study of the genome of this particular bug... should be all that's needed to get a pretty good idea whether this virus falls into that camp... with a high sensitivity to weak bases... or not.

It also answers the question, with a simple look at the identified address... whether or not hydroxychloroquine is likely to be an effective drug.
