That’s a very interesting study

The post-1991 studies I saw were specific to SARS viruses, of which covid 19 is a variant. This study involved the mouse hepatitis virus, another corona virus.

I wonder whether testing neural cells instead of the cells found in the vicinity of the lungs makes any difference.

I have no idea if the mouse hep virus will act in the same way as covid 19. But I will note the anecdotal evidence and the studies I saw is that chloroquine will preclude fusion in SARS type viruses. The anecdotal evidence and the previous studies thus suggest but admittedly do not prove that quinine based meds are likely to work on covid 19.

I will acknowledge that the study you found suggests great variability regarding the fusion function within closely related corona virus variants. And that this variability is generally seen when completely different virus families are compared.

Ammonium chloride has not been tested and no one is suggesting it as an option even though it is far cheaper and much more readily available than the quinine meds. When pH altering strategies do work, ammonium chloride is also very effective. It is a simple chemical, not a pharmaceutical.

But I agree with you: a study of covid 19’s genome would settle the issue definitively. I read somewhere that the Chinese had unraveled the genome but refused to share it. Don’t know if it has been independently defined in the West. Probably.
