You really are "Lost In Space" ... This strategy might have worked about
5 years ago, but not NOW. DEC realized the Alpha was not competitive and
that is why they sold the design and Fab to Intel. DEC is committed to
porting their version of UNIX to Merced for next generation server/enterprise
computing platforms. The K6's role will be on the low cost, entry level
system that sells for <$1000 (soon to be < $500) ... No profit margin here!!

IMHO, this was a very bad acquisition for Compaq ... they don't need the
distraction of trying to "save" DEC. DEC has had flat revenue (at about
13B$) for the last 10 YEARS ... the prized Alpha architecture has been
beaten by Intel's PII and upcoming Merced. What is it that DEC brings
to Compaq ... maybe some large business accounts and a good service organization,
but Compaq will be forced to layoff many DEC employees. This should really
help the morale. This purchase reminds me of the ATT purchase of NCR.
ATT spun-off the IC Fabs to Hyundai, while the rest of NCR has added little
additional revenue/value to ATT. Now ATT is downsizing by about 15,000 jobs.
