Conned is probably too strong. But the models developed by the infectious disease experts were not just off by a little bit, they missed the mark by an order of magnitude.

Do you think they prefaced their dire reports with the cautionary warning that their confidence level was only at 5% (your mileage may vary)?
Not likely.

Northern Italy had very unique circumstances such as:
- a large percentage of very old seniors who were in poor health
- many of the men were lifetime smokers
- frequent travel between China and Italy (Chinese workers in most factories)
- airports were not shut down until it was way too late have any effect on the importation of the disease
