Perhaps the vast majority just don't want to be pestered by religious zealots who won't let them alone.

As a liberal I know I am so sick and tired of PETA commercials, where they leave dogs out in the rain listening to depressing music and then wonder why they shiver and look sad, that I never consider donating to them, but I would never bad mouth an animal activist in public because you never hear the end of it.
