just in in-tray, CoVid touches family, and the descriptive is likely not atypical

Objet : Cousin Angela in hospital

Dear family members,

We hope this email finds you and yours in good health and fine spirits wherever you are : at home with family and pets in T&T, at your holiday cottage or at home in Canada; riding out the wave at university in California; or whether you are safe at your brother and sister in law's in the States. It is wonderful to hear that neighbours in London have become more daring and now greet you (la distanciation sociale oblige) with a piece of yummy, home-made cake- a way of saying "we care"! Sitting it out with your friend in the south of France, c'est sûrement un bon plan, Rheanna. Is food in Provence just as tasty as food in Sicily?

This afternoon, cousin Isaac spoke to one of the nurses at hospital. Good news ... Angela's condition is now stable.

Thank you for all your messages of best wishes and support.

In his whatsapp message, he said, "Angela has tested positive for Covid-19 but the nurse says she is doing well and her condition is stable at the moment. She is still on oxygen and IV antibiotics."

At the beginning of the month, cousin Angela began feeling poorly: a chesty cough and fever made her listless and took away her appetite. After a video consultation, Dr ______ of _________ surgery prescribed a course of anitbiotics. After it ran its course, Angela showed no sign of improvement so a second course was then prescribed to continue fighting any bacterial infection she might have had. Unfortunately, Angela did not respond well and her condition got worse over the Easter weekend.

She received many phone calls from friends and family but verbal communication on her part, was just about impossible.

On Easter Monday, Dr ________ mentioned to Derek and me that she had all the symptoms of Covid-19 but testing could not be carried out at the carehome. "Do you think your cousin would want to be taken to hospital?" he asked.

On Tuesday, Mrs ______, a community psychiatric nurse who has known Angela for a long time went to the carehome to give Angela her monthly depot injection and found her to be quite physically unwell, confused . She made her concerns known to one of the GPs responsible for residents at care home that afternoon.

A good friend of Angela, who was also alarmed at the deterioration in Angela's condition, took it upon herself to contact Mr _____________ (Labour), one of the MPs for _______. The concern she had was that the health and well being of elderly residents in London carehomes under lockdown might be compromised. That population was certainly more vulnerable to the virus.

On Thursday evening, after a call from the staff at care home, Dr ____________ took the decision, with Derek's and my consent, to have her admitted to hospital. Angela was aggressive toward the 2 nurses and she refused to go at first. Eventually she came round and they managed to get her ready. _______________ hospital is not unfamiliar to her, having been hospitalised there before on more than one occasion. Well equipped, good medical care, caring and supportive staff....

Friday April 17th, Mrs __________ said in her email that Angela had received her depot injection and was no longer on oxygen.

Today is Sunday and all is as well as can be. Thank goodness she is getting the medical attention she needs.

Derek gets first hand information as he calls the ward on a regular basis. Count on us to pass on any updates.

Unfortunately Pat and Steve's trip to London had to be postponed but when things get better, we look forward to seeing them in this part of the world. We'll organise a "cousinade" English style. It's meant to be a "happy to see you again & bring and share" party for first cousins but all relatives are welcome!

Angela's desire to see Steve again and finally meet Pat will give her the strength to fight the fight until she recovers...she reminds me of cousin Judy in so many ways ... a real 'hot foot' as we say in the West Indies..

Well, this is all for now. God bless...

Affectueusement,
