Often people do get such immunity, so many assumed it would be the case with COVID-19, but I don't think the data is in yet. Presumably it would give you at least short term immunity (if you couldn't fight off the disease you would still have it) but immunity that lasts for weeks isn't nearly as useful as immunity that lasts for years.

As for how infectious the disease is, my understanding is that its only moderately high for people who are exposed to it. But the fact that it is symptom free for some time at the beginning of the infection (while still spreading from those symptom free people) and possibly for many symptom free for extended periods of time (perhaps never causing symptoms) means that your more likely to be exposed to it. Also since its new there is less build up of natural resistance to it and no vaccines.
