That's wrong. It is "just paper oil"... only because it is a contract for delivery with a performance date. If you wanted to get paid to take the real stuff off their hands... all you had to do was buy that paper priced at -$40 per barrel... and wait one day... and each contract would automatically convert into 1000 barrels of oil on your front lawn. Unfortunately, gold has no similar storage constraints...
