are they lying when they say they will need this, or do you know something they don't?

There is definite need for datbase storage related to Ecommerce. One could argue that a shop could run their business on a paper basis although that would irk us tech investors. However most Ecommerce you find today is small shops that run a shoestring budget. Some are started by tech geeks that have enough business sense to smell an opportunity. Don't be fooled into thinking everyone is the size of Amazon.com, or that they have a proven product/service to pull people into their site.

I have a close friend that is involved with a leading on-line grocery shopping service via the net. They have spent enormous amounts of money on infrastructure including enterprise class data servers. Still, their number one source of shopping orders comes from the old fashion fax order.

Although Neilson found that more then half of the 48 million Internet users in the US and Canada were not likely to make purchases online there is a market. Will the site providers need enterprise class data sources? Thats the $$$ question.

IMHO the current state of Internet technology is capable of hosting large scale Ecommerce. However the usage of the Internet via a desktop computer is still a limiting factor. Until we find small consumer electronics linking into the Internet, Ecommerce will reamin a market limited to those willing to make the intellectual effort. I look forward to PersonalJava taking off and gaining broad support in this area. Of course that will trigger the opportunity for vendors to provide fingerprint size data sources. But you didn't hear that from me.
