We actually cannot. Regardless of leadership. If the best you can do is to "flatten the curve", you will save a small number of lives. But flattening the curve is mostly about rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

You have to fundamentally change the mean and standard deviation to actually save a lot of lives. And that, by definition, is not "flattening". It is changing the area underneath the curve.

Vaccine or a lot of people getting sick, for most, like a URI or even less. But for those few, the 0.1%, it doesn't end so well.
