The technological break-thru is called "storage".
Whatever form it comes in, it better be more efficient, more portable, and more potent than fossil fuels.

Lugging around a 1,200 lb battery on a 5,000 lb Tesla makes no sense, in case you thought that was the way to get rid of fossil fuels.
