Dogen was walking to the mountain, he had heard that a great master was teaching the truth of all things and all that Dogen needed to do was to travel there and sit at his feet to learn. Dogen knew to approach the mountain from the bottom, this is always the best way to the top. One afternoon after a long day of walking on his journey Dogen sat by a stream and washed his feet. Looking about he saw a young man standing patiently in the stream fishing with a homemade pole. The cold water from the mountain glacier numbed Dogen's toes and fingers as he washed away the days travel. The young man, looking up and seeing Dogen, approached and with no words offered him a fish. Dogen accepted the fish and went to a small blackened circle, gathering a few small sticks Dogen made a fire. With a deft hand he split and gutted the fish and placed it onto a green bough to roast. They both placed their feet on the sun warmed stones along the edge of the creek. After the fish cooked Dogen went to his bag and he removed a broad wrapped leaf and opened it to reveal some rice given to him in the morning before he left the monastery where he had slept for the night. He took the fish and placed it on the rice and carefully divided the food and then tore the leaf in half. The boy reached out and took his half of the meal. They ate carefully and slowly making sure no food was wasted. As they ate they both watched the stream flow by and they both listened to the sounds of the birds in the forest. The fire dwindled as the boy gathered his pole and returned to the pool to fish. Dogen gathered his things and carried on, his journey not yet done. Looking up he saw that the mountain was still there, it had not moved.
