All the monks were excited, they heard that Huineng was coming to their monastery. The floors were polished and robes were brushed and cleaned. Whispers during zazen passed amongst them telling of Huineng's sudden wisdom, many dreamed that they too could understand the diamond sutra if Huineng was to reveal it's secret. Morning prayers were hurried and the students made sure everything was in order as they gathered in the courtyard. As the abbot and his close attendants made their way down to the courtyard an old man in brown homespun stopped sweeping and leaning on his broom asked a student nearby what was happening. The young monk explained they were waiting for the famous teacher Huineng to arrive. "Who is he, this Huineng?" asked the old man. The young monk explained that Huineng was the Sixth Patriarch and a great monk who had understood the Diamond Sutra immediately upon hearing it. The Huineng these people were waiting for wouldn't know how to sweep a floor the old man thought, he would know the diamond sutra but that would not keep the dust at bay so Huineng kept sweeping.
