John, just think for a moment. If like you said that the problem had been solved, or would be SOON solved, then everyone in semi industry would build 12" fabs NOW.

Business is all about taking reasonable risk. Taking too much risk, you kill yourself. Taking too little risk, someone else will kill you. I quote COF of intel "It is like driving 150 m/h knowing that maybe there is a brick wall down road. But you can NOT slow down. If you do, someone will surpass you." I will assume that intel is confident that they will be able avoid the brick wall if there is one. But NOBODY has the crystal ball.

By the way, I am sure that there will be great benefits to be the first to figure out the 12" fabs. Just look at intel now: by successfully implement quarter micron, they are killing AMD and NSM.

No risk, No reward.
