Even if you are right about the “fake” calls, it doesn’t excuse or justify Trump’s “misguided” comments / suggestions. What I personally find even more offensive was his pedestrian attempt to explain them away with his sarcasm claim instead of coming out with something like “Let me put the record straight. I misspoke and hereby retract. My apologies if my comments caused any harm.” That would have been “presidential”.
