A lot of the Spanish "explorers" and settlers were just standard imperialists and thieves.

But like with Italians and the annual debate about "Columbus Day" -- there are a lot of good people on both sides :-)

Some Californication: Near here we have "Drakes Bay." Why do we honor Sir Francis Drake, a slave trader in search of treasure and conquest? Same thing with the treatment of Native Californians by the Missions on the El Camino Real-- "The Royal Road" or "King's Highway."

Not such a great legacy to celebrate.
