George Custer was considered a hero to the Union because of his actions at Gettysburg. On the third day of the battle Lee had a plan to attack the center of the line. The plan was to have Picket's men begin advancing in plain sight of the union troops a mile away. This would draw the union army to begin firing at the advancing line. In the meantime JEB Stuart and a calvary of several thousand men were to ride behind the cemetary ridge and gallop up the the slope to the middle where they would create confusion and mayhem by attacking the federal defensive lines from the rear and interior of their position. As the union redirected their attention to the calvary charge the confederate infantry would have time to advance to the union lines and overrun it.

What George Custer did was to take his relatively small (a few hundred) calvary soldiers and meet JEB Stuart on the road with a thick forest on one side and the steepest part of he ridge on the other. Custer and his men dismounted and kept shooting at the confederate calvary as it became jammed on the road. This delayed the calvary attack until it was too late to do the confederates any good. The battle could easily have gone the other way.
