The American simplification of politics into a duality with only two teams... even if that masks a lot more real complexity... does still require that most American thinking re politics revolves around that duality, winners and losers being decided directly in elections, not imposing negotiations for enabling coalitions. Canadian politics remains mostly a puzzle... Every time I think I have the score card figured out... it turns out... nope. Not that I've dedicated much effort to it... But my forays across the northern border have been illuminating. I do particularly appreciate that in Canada the fact of political disagreement tends not to devolve into a factional turf war over silly things like pot holes. In the U.S., the political contest tends to foster gridlock... with an unwillingness to surrender turf, or control, even when its clearly in the common interest that the pot holes should be filled efficiently. Instead... we live with potholes.
