image disappearances all boil down to where the image resides on the internet.
the best "fail-proof" method is to upload the image to the S.I. server using the
"image insert" icon/function at the top of the editing window (it's just to the right
of the twitter bird icon that you'll see above your text field when you're making a
post).

then click on "choose file" and search for the image on your computer to upload.
when you find the image, click "open" and then "insert". this will upload the actual
image file to the S.I. server where it will remain even if it's later removed from the
site on the internet where you found it. some sites block "remote linking" of images
to other sites like S.I. but once it's uploaded to the S.I. server it should always
be visible in your post. there's a size limit on images uploaded this way.

the "catch-22" to this method is that the image must first reside on your computer's
hard drive. if you're wanting to upload an image from the internet, you must first
save it to your computer's hard drive. (right click the image and choose "save as").

of course, it's much easier just to copy the image to your clipboard and "paste" it
where you want it in your post... BUT this only inserts the "image link" instead of
the actual "image file" and the image may or may NOT show up in your post... depending
on whether or not the site it's on allows "hot linking" of it's images. most sites do
but many do not.

this method i'm sharing is for use when you have problems doing it the easy
"copy & paste" way and your image doesn't show up in your final post.

lotta smart and helpful folks on that thread... different operating systems and
different web browsers have their own peculiarities and i'm no expert.
