I had an interesting conversation with Dan Culver this morning. I specifically asked Dan about MAO and how FONR is enforcing thier patent rights. Dan told me that for some reason the lawsuit did not apply to machines built before September 1992. Therefore, GE is probably still using MAO (or has the right to use) on older machines. The $128 M suit applied to ~600 machines and GE has since had an injunction, as we all know to remove or stop using MAO on thier machines. Dan said that for every scanning center that has one or more of these 600 GE machines for them not to use MAO on a daily basis, they feel is costing the center about $20,000/week.

I told Dan that I had called GE and that they told me they have devised an alternative technology to MAO. Dan told me that they are calling it Echo Planar. Dan was proud to mention that Echo Planar is diagnostically inferior to MAO (any thoughts from experienced MRI people are welcome). Dan said that Echo Planar is good for a SCOUT but is not really meant for what MRI is supposed to do.

Dan said that FONR knows that GE customers are not happy about not being able to use MAO. I asked Dan if he felt this was an opportunity for FONR to develop relations with these centers to gain some recognition and work out some relationshipsas has been suggested by others on this thread. His response was that GE has acted like an 800 lb. Gorilla through this whole process and to let the centers remain mad at GE.

I went on to ask Dan about NIR and he said that the QUAD 12,000 is a brand new product and it has the both of best worlds. High field magnet strength and open. Prior to the QUAD, doctors and patients had a choice of either a high field closed MRI (preferred by the doc.'s) or mid field open (preferred by the patients). With the Quad, both the doctors and patients have what is needed in a quality product. In regards to NIR, Dan said that with any new product there are always some bugs to work out and the QUAD is no exception. They are not pushing NIR until they have all the bugs worked out and know that they won't have to go back and upgrade machines all throughout the world. FONR feels that they have time on their side and that they plan on doing it right the first time. My conversation with Dan only emphasizes what I have been all along >LONG ON FONR<. THIS IS A QUALITY COMPANY. THEY HAVE BEEN IN THIS BUSINESS FOR 20+ YEARS AND THE SKY IS THE LIMIT.

THE ABOVE LISTED POST IS NOT INTENDED TO SWAY ANY OPINOINS ON THIS STOCK OR TO TALK ANYBODY INTO PURCHASING THIS STOCK.
