Physics happens.

No ifs, ands, buts, coulds, mights, maybes, possiblys, "do ya thinks?".

The polar magnetic excursion is quite the kicker to a GSM.

Since it's a magnetic phenomenon occurring coincidentally with the approach of a galactic current sheet polarity boundary region, there's probably a connection there.
That's the only "probably" that I can dig out of it all.
And then there's the observations of Barnard's Star and Alpha Proxima in succession.
So that causal connection leans more toward physics happening than it does toward "probably".
