ADSL will need special analog power requirments. Two conference calls ago, Tom Dugan, SMTC product manager, identified ADSL as a big market opportunity for SMTC. My ears perked up like a cat on a hot tin roof.
Recently I wrote to Dugan to confirm *IF* all flavors of xDSL would require special power requirments. The answer was YES. Specifically he said " on all xDSL interfaces there must be protection to meet the Bellcore (1089 specification) and FCC (part 68) requirements."
So, yes Virginia, ADSL does represent an opportunity for SMTC.
Now, allow me to connect the dots and do some crystal ball gazing.
This is just me thinking out loud.
Last week Compaq, Intel and the other powers that be announced that they want to integrate ADSL functionality into the motherboard. (Smart move because this puts ADSL closer to the 'plug and play' arena. )
We know that BOTH Intel and Compaq use SMTC regulators for their PC motherboards. So....if the ADSL functionality gets integrated into the motherboard, anybody else but me think that SMTC is well position to serve Compaq and Intel in this new market??
Again, keep in mind that I am only constructing a possible scenerio. However, it sure doesn't seem far fetched to me.
